Dead Before Daylight is an Alternate Universe Urban Fantasy role play in a world where supernatural creatures and humans exist side by side – at least, some of them do. Creatures like witches, pixies and satyrs live and work as openly as any human. They commonly hold positions of power in government and are afforded every right and protection.

Other creatures are not so lucky. Those believed threats to humankind and other benign creatures are still persecuted and oppressed. Beings like vampires and werewolves are still forced to live largely in hiding, as they are not afforded the protections of law.

Such blacklisted creatures have created a haven for themselves in the small city of Dawnbreak; but their sanctuary is becoming increasingly threatened by the arrival of outsiders. In the meantime a menacing power is lurking in the forests and increasingly beginning to threaten the town as people begin to go missing, and mangled bodies are beginning to be discovered in and around the woodlands.

The wendigo is a fearsome creature of uncertain origins, though they are commonly believed to have once been people consumed by an ancient force. They are solitary creatures most often found in far, isolated ranges of wilderness where they range vast tracts of territory and will prey on almost anything that becomes available. It is said that wendigo haunt foot trails in the deep wilderness, and will stray even inward to civilization in hard times.

Wendigo vary in appearance, though they most commonly appear as grotesque, partially self-cannibalized elk or wolf headed beings with emaciated, humanoid bodies which appear more dead than alive. Antlers and twisted bone growths have been reported in most reliable accounts of encounters with these creatures.

Creatures of insatiable hunger, nearly all wendigo will eventually devour their own lips and cheeks from ceaseless gnawing. They are bold creatures, willing to openly attack even moderately sized groups. When circumstances allow, wendigo have been known not to immediately kill their victims; instead crippling their prey to be kept alive for further feeding.

Event Guidelines -

  • At present, there is no known way to kill the creature.
  • Due to a not yet identified cause, wounds inflicted by a wendigo’s scratch or bite will not heal naturally. They will cause rapid onset of illness in humans, witches, and skinwalkers. While they will not typically cause illness in werewolves or vampires, they will not heal of their own accord. Witches are unable to heal these wounds, and as of yet no cure has been discovered.
  • It is unknown if there is a single creature, or several.
  • Characters may encounter the wendigo anywhere in the forest regions or near the outskirts of town, though chances of such increase drastically near the abandoned mines.
