Dead Before Daylight is an Alternate Universe Urban Fantasy role play in a world where supernatural creatures and humans exist side by side – at least, some of them do. Creatures like witches, pixies and satyrs live and work as openly as any human. They commonly hold positions of power in government and are afforded every right and protection.

Other creatures are not so lucky. Those believed threats to humankind and other benign creatures are still persecuted and oppressed. Beings like vampires and werewolves are still forced to live largely in hiding, as they are not afforded the protections of law.

Such blacklisted creatures have created a haven for themselves in the small city of Dawnbreak; but their sanctuary is becoming increasingly threatened by the arrival of outsiders. In the meantime a menacing power is lurking in the forests and increasingly beginning to threaten the town as people begin to go missing, and mangled bodies are beginning to be discovered in and around the woodlands.

 A Brief History of Dawnbreak

According to the history books, Dawnbreak was officially colonized in the early 1800’s.

In truth, the town was first settled long beforehand by a pack of werewolves seeking a home beyond encroachment of humanity. The first of these beasts migrated to the New World in the early 1500’s, having chartered passage to escape increasingly werewolf hunts. In the following centuries these wolves would gradually migrate further and further west to escape colonial expansion until finally they were driven far beyond lands settled by humans into a region that would come to be known as Alevskaya.

For nearly two centuries, their settlement was one of the last pure safe havens where their kind were able to exist free of humanity. Unfortunately, this ended abruptly when Russian prospectors discovered coal in the mountains in 1802. New settlers began moving into the region, and with them came other supernatural creatures in search of a haven of their own.

Originally these threats caused violent rifts in the original pack. Much of what occurred in those following decades has been lost to history, and what memory remains is often written off as myth; but eventually close proximity and sheer numbers led to the revelation of the existence of werewolves and other creatures.

Today, Dawnbreak exists primarily as a discreet fishing and production center with a small niche for tourism; and while some creatures are tolerated more than others, the majority of Dawnbreak’s native human population are aware that they are not alone. Most of the town’s public resources are quietly dedicated to keeping matters in check, namely the city council, ranger and police departments. However, in an age of ever increasing technological advances and risk for exposure many are left to wonder how long this often uneasy truce may last.
