Playing with the Grandkids

Recommended Posts

Alice and Seth had asked Violet and Red to watch the kids so they could get some sleep. So the pair of them had packed up everything that the kids needed to be able to stay for a day at Red's house. When she got there, they were in their car seats. Alice had the diaper bags and one kid and Seth had the other two as they walked in.

Violet was there, she was dressed down because she wasn't out on business.

"They are all asleep," Alice started to explain feeding and diapering before she realized she was talking to a woman that knew most of her family from the time they were infants.

"I've got this Alice. Get some rest. You look like you both need it," she said.

"Not even sure I remember what that means," Seth muttered as he gently settled the carriers down in the living room, trying his damndest not to wake Marina or Alex as he did so. All things considered they were good infants. They didn't fuss much. But they were still infants and usually if one cried the other two went off as well.

He backed up carefully once they were settled, "Thanks Vi," he said, giving his step mother a brief embrace before stepping back beside Alice.

"Of course. Any time. That's why I've been in town so much. Who is who?"

"Green is Alex, blue is Reagan, and yellow is Marina," she said to her," they just kept them color coordinated for their own sanity.

"See you both later," she said to them. "Enjoy the day off."

"Never thought I'd be so eager to spend a day in a blissful coma state," Seth murmured, stifling a yawn. They'd talked about relaxing and watching movies but he doubted they'd make it through the first before they were both passed out.

Seth huffed softly, "Well thank you for that bleak outlook," he answered. It was meant as a joke but he was tired enough that his tone didn't carry quite like he'd meant, "Anyway thanks again. And ah... call Gran if you need anything because we're unplugging," he said with a half smile.

"I'm sure that won't last long," Red answered as he glanced over his shoulder at her, "crib and everything is set up for them in the room across from ours, though," he said. He'd pulled down what was available from the attic to make watching them easier.

Violet nodded to him as she moved inside and went to get settled to read. Wait for them to start to fussing. Fortunately children of this age were easier than older ages. They mostly just ate, slept and pooped. The only difficult part would be having to deal with three at once.

Red finished up the cigarette he'd been working on before making his way out into the yard to take care of a few small chores he'd been neglecting. It was when he heard the sounds of crying from inside the house that he set aside his current task to go in and help Violet take care of their grandchildren.

Violet went and unstrapped the one that started crying first and pulled them out starting to rock them as she went to the diaper bag to grab them a new diaper and pull out their formula. As this one fussed one of the others started to cry as well and Red came in to help her.

"Good lungs apparently," she smiled over to him as she settled to get the first one changed. This was one stage of life that Lilin never had to deal with with their own offspring. So she took care to be careful as she took care of them and Red rocked the others. She moved to handle making them each bottles with the one she had cradled in her arms. She did it deftly, a sure sign that she had been taking care of human children for a long time.

"Apparently," Red agreed as he settled. Despite what one might have assumed he actually wasn't terrible with infants and small children - it had been when his had started to get older that the trouble started up. So while Violet move about with Marina he got Alex and Reagan mostly settled again, fussing only intermittently as they waited to be fed.

"The girls remind me of their mother," she said to him with a smile. "Even in their squished face features of human children. They have her features. They all have her eyes," she noted as she brought bottles over for the two that Red had. "Alex has your son's ears though."

He nodded, "They were fortunate," Red murmured. Things had gotten better with new technology and advancements in medicine. Only a few decades before it was likely the outcome would have been much worse than a premature birthing, "Wasn't expecting him to settle any time soon, though," Red admitted.

"Oddly enough, considering how much she used to further provoke and drag it out of him," Red answered, "those two have been stirring shit up together since they started running around in grade school. Never could figure out which of them was the worst influence on the other."

"Knowing them both? I don't think there was a bigger influence so much as a challenge being constantly raised for it. They are rather good at trying to one up each other," she said with a smile. "Do you want to know what they all are?" she asked him.
